Image Pixelator converts any photo into pixel art. Drag the block-size slider and the preview redraws instantly, so you can dial in anything from a light mosaic to a chunky retro look, then download the result as PNG, JPG or WebP.

How to Pixelate an Image Online

  1. Add your photo

Drop a photo into Image Pixelator, click to browse, or paste it with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac).

  2. Adjust the blocks

Drag the block-size slider. Small blocks give a subtle mosaic; large blocks give bold pixel art.

  3. Download

Keep the original size, or switch on “Export a smaller pixel image” for one pixel per block. Then click Download.

Block Size: From Subtle Mosaic to Chunky Pixel Art

Block size sets how many pixels are merged into one square. Around 8–16 px you get a soft mosaic that still resembles the photo; from about 24 px upwards it reads as deliberate pixel art. Bigger photos need bigger blocks for the same look, and because Image Pixelator previews every change live, there is no guesswork.

Soften the effect with the strength slider

Strength blends the pixelated version with your original. At 100% you see the full effect; lower values let the photo show through the blocks.

Save a small pixel image

Switch on “Export a smaller pixel image” to save one pixel per block. You get a compact file that works well as a sprite or as a starting point for pixel-art editing.

Blur Faces and Sensitive Details

Pixelating is a common way to hide faces, licence plates and addresses before sharing a picture. Image Pixelator applies the effect to the whole picture, so it suits cases where the entire photo should be unreadable, such as a preview or thumbnail. Use large blocks at full strength and check the downloaded file at full size. Pixelation is a visual mask, not encryption: for truly sensitive details, remove them entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have a question? Contact us.

What is the difference between pixelating and blurring?

Pixelating merges blocks of pixels so the image becomes visibly blocky; blurring averages neighbouring pixels into a smooth result. Pixelation hides detail more obviously.

What block size should I use?

Start at 12–16 px for a mosaic effect, and go larger if you can still recognise the subject. Large photos need larger blocks.

Can I pixelate part of an image?

Not yet. Image Pixelator currently pixelates the whole picture.

Is this image pixelator free?

Yes. Image Pixelator is free to use, with no account and no watermark.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Image Pixelator runs inside your browser, so your images never leave your device.

What formats can I pixelate?

JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP and GIF (first frame), up to 25 MB and 8,000 pixels on each side. Download the result as PNG, JPG or WebP.
